![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() House, Senate, and President Joe Biden came together to pass one of the largest environmental bills in U.S. is one of only two United Nations member states, next to the Holy See (the Vatican), that has not ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity, which is the landmark international agreement to protect nature that COP15 sought to cement. COP15 is the biggest biodiversity conference in the world, convening nearly 200 nations with the intention of striking a deal to halt and reverse this catastrophic loss of nature.ĬOP15 comes off the heels of COP27 – the leading global conference on climate change – but a key difference between these two meetings is that the United States is only an official party at the latter. Last December, I represented Massachusetts and the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators at the 15th Conference of the Parties on biodiversity (COP15) in Montreal. We can still chart a different future for our planet, but we must act now to head off the worst consequences of this decline. Some scientists believe we may even be living through a sixth mass extinction event. Around a million plants and animals are facing extinction. Wildlife populations have fallen by almost 70% worldwide. ![]()
